Real-time Leather Defect Detection

With LASRA (Leather & Shoe Research Association) – New Zealand

Visual Computing Technologies is providing consultancy services to the New Zealand Leather and Shoe Research Association under a six-years research project, which aims to develop machine vision technologies to quantify leather quality. This project is under the umbrella of the one science platform research project from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Expected project outcomes:

Development of a cutting-edge machine vision platform that can detect and quantify leather defects with:

  1. The ability to detect multiple defects simultaneously.
  2. Recommendations and modifications in the leather processing pipeline based on defect types.
  3. Automatic leather quality quantification features.

Effat Eye Diagnostics

With Effat University – Saudi Arabia

We successfully developed and delivered an application for automated diagnosis and referral of diabetic retinopathy for our partner Effat University Saudia Arabia.

Features and services:

  1. The application allows users to get diagnosis and referral suggestions from their mobile phones.
  2. We also developed a web application, where users can upload their images and get suggestions at the comfort of their houses.
  3. The core technology developed can also augment clinicians to speed up the time-consuming manual process in clinical settings.

Multi-Layer Attendance System

With COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Pakistan

We have developed a multi-layer authentication-based attendance system that allows students to mark their attendance using a mobile phone application. This allows for a time-saving and non-intrusive attendance marking process. The project is currently being integrated with additional security authentication layers.

Features and services:

  1. The student centric mobile application uses biometric authentication (facial recognition) and a QR code to mark the attendance
  2. Comes integrated with face anti-spoofing features
  3. Uses intelligent machine vision to identify classroom settings in the background
  4. Leverages device ID and total mean GPS location for additional authentication
  5. Provides basic attendance logging system available to students

Academic Quality Index

With COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI), Pakistan

We have developed and deployed a unique, customizable multi-tier platform that forms the basis of maintaining the record of academic and research related activities and contributions online. This system is contributing to CUI’s target of moving towards a paperless office. It comprises a collection of modules that allow a variety of academic auditing jobs to be performed seamlessly and in a user-friendly manner.

Features and services:

  1. Measurement of teachers’ input in research and departmental activities.
  2. Quantifiable measure of teachers’ performance in terms of student learning outcomes.
  3. Student’s performance with respect to learning output in terms of their section, across terms, across subjects and teachers.
  4. Student behaviour and feedback, with the integration of a “Visual Student Attentiveness Monitor”, a module currently under development.
  5. Detailed reports of students’ performance over the terms with regards to grades, behaviour and skills learned.
  6. Faculty reports across terms, across subjects and across individual students.

Mobile Phone Point-of-sale Service

Due to a serious law-and-order concerns, the Pakistan government mandates all vendors to maintain a record of all sales along with photographic evidence of the buyers/sellers along with copies of their computerized national ID cards (CNICs), which is a logistic hassle for most small scale independent phone vendors. VC-Technologies aims to help small vendors by providing a multi-platform online service. The purpose of this service is to maintain centralized sales records with all required photographic evidences that can be provided to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) with relative ease.

  2. Complete point-of-sale system with provision to acquire and maintain photographs and CNIC records.
